Memorial Day Reflection

The United States has set aside a day to remember people who have died while serving their country in the armed services: the Navy, Army, Air Force, Marines, or Coast Guard. Their job is to protect our country and many of them died in wars. This holiday was meant for us to honor those people. However, as a child, I can remember Memorial Day as a day we took fresh flowers to the cemetery and cleaned around all the family graves. As Memorial Day day approached I knew it was near the end of the school year and the beginning of summer vacation.

  1. I think that it is great that you had that experience as a child of going to the cemetery and honoring the graves of your family by making them tidy and placing flowers there.

  2. I, like Karen, like that you honored family on memorial day. I think it is important for everyone to have a chance to remember those they've lost and to honor the lives they had. I don't think there are many parents today who do such with their children. I think about mine and it saddens me to know they will never know their great-grandfather who means so much to me. It is my responsibility to let them know who his is and how important he is to our family. Memorial day should be honored!

  3. My little cousins did that same thing this year for the first time. Hannah (8) and Sarah-Grace (6) have already lived in four different states @ such a young age but handle it like troops. Their dad is in the military and they are so supportive of what he does and love taking part in all that they can do if it deals with their daddy's work. At their young age, they understand more than I do @ the age of 26. This year they were able to witness the laying of the wreath on the Tomb of the Unknown Solider. These girls KNOW what Memorial Day means and their parents will make sure that they never forget.
